USB drive is a portable storage device that can be connected directly into a computer using built-in connector. USB flash drives are also called as thumb drives, jump drives, keychain drives, and pocket drives etc. Sony, SanDisk and Kingston are the popular brands who manufacture USB drives. Flash memory is used in USB drive to store large number of files. USB drives are available in different storage capacities. The maximum storage capacity of USB drive is 256GB. USB drive operates just like any other removable storage device. When USB drive is connected into a USB connection, it will be shown just like any other removable storage device. Mac Operating System displays USB drive icon on the desktop whereas, Windows Operating System detects the flash drive and displays an Autoplay option to quickly access the files stored on USB drive. USB drive does not contain moving parts like hard drive thus they are less susceptible to mechanical failures.

Common scenarios that cause data loss are explained as follows:

Accidental deletion of files from USB drive: When you delete files from USB drive or any other external storage device, they are not moved to Recycle Bin. Instead, they bypass the Recycle Bin. If you accidentally delete essential files from USB drive, then you cannot undelete files from Recycle Bin resulting in loss of files.

Data loss due to corruption: USB drive may get corrupted due to virus attacks. In order to remove virus, updated antivirus program needs to be used. But, sometimes antivirus programs can also cause data loss. When you connect USB drive, each folder and file is automatically scanned by antivirus program. If it finds any virus then it may delete entire folder which is affected by viruses resulting in loss of files.

Abruptly removal of USB drives: Accidentally or abruptly removing USB drives from the computer may cause data loss. You need to use “Safely Remove Hardware” icon in order to properly disconnect USB drive from system. Because, even if you think that you have closed all the files on the USB drive, it is still possible that the USB drive is accessed by system in the background without any indication. Therefore, if you abruptly remove it from the system then it may corrupt the file system of USB drive resulting in loss of files.

Data loss due to errors: When file system get corrupted, you may encounter error messages like “USB device not recognized” or “USB device attached to this computer has malfunctioned” etc. These error messages do not allow you to access files from USB drive resulting in loss of files. Generally, file system may get corrupted due to sudden power failure or abrupt system shut down while transferring files from USB drives to computer etc.

Although, the files are not permanently lost from the USB drive, you can easily restore lost data from USB drive by using reliable recovery software.

Precautions that are to be taken to avoid data loss are, always take backup, make use of “Safely Remove Hardware” icon to properly disconnect USB drive and while deleting files from USB drive make sure that you are deleting unwanted files. Remo Recover (Windows) Basic Edition quickly recovers lost files from USB drives. This software can recover different types of files like .doc, .xls, .xlsx, .png, .jpeg, .wav, .txt etc. SanDisk, Kingston, Sony etc are the different brands of USB drives supported by this software. This software can also recover deleted files from flash drive other than USB drives. This software performs signature search to locate lost files quickly. The software can undelete files from Windows 7, Vista, XP, Server 2003 and Server 2008

Follow below mentioned steps to recover lost or accidentally deleted files from USB drive ,

Step 1: Download and install Remo Recover (Windows) Basic Edition then launch it. Select “Recover files” option from the main window as shown in Figure 1.

The Recycle bin icon on the Windows desktop is a directory that temporarily stores files deleted by the users. This enables you to retrieve those files back which you may have accidentally deleted. Deleted items remain there in Recycle bin until they are retrieved back. In Windows OS files can be moved to Recycle bin in a number of ways like selecting a file and pressing delete key, right clicking a file and selecting delete from the drop down menu, by dragging and dropping a file into Recycle bin, etc. In Windows one Recycle bin is allocated for each partition or hard disk. Sometimes, we lose our important files from Windows Recycle bin i.e. files cannot be accessed anymore due to certain scenarios. Some of these scenarios are discussed below:

Common File loss Scenarios from Windows Recycle Bin:

Human Error: By accidentally using Shift + Delete keys files are deleted without being moved to the Recycle bin i.e. they bypass the Recycle bin after deletion. Data can also be lost from Recycle bin while trying to free some disk space by emptying Recycle bin folder. Files deleted from compressed folders are also not stored in Recycle bin.

Recycle bin Bypass: There are certain cases when the files themselves get deleted from Windows Recycle bin and hence cannot be accessed by user anymore. Those cases are called Recycle bin bypass. When Recycle bin is full Windows automatically creates enough space for most recently deleted files by clearing some previously deleted files. When a file deleted from Windows operating system is having size larger than that of the free space available in the Recycle bin, either the file bypasses the Recycle bin and gets deleted from Recycle bin automatically or the file is stored in the Recycle bin by deleting some previously deleted files. In both the cases some important files are deleted from Recycle bin.

File Exceeding in size: Each partition in Windows operating system has its own Recycle bin. Files deleted from each partition will get stored in its respective Recycle bin. When a file having size larger than that of the size of the Recycle bin is deleted it is not stored in the Recycle bin and it simply bypasses the Recycle bin.

Using Command Prompt: Some of the important files may get deleted while using Windows command prompt like by using “del” command or by using cut and paste command.

To avoid file deletion from Recycle bin in all the above mentioned scenarios some precautions should be followed.

Always maintain some free space in the Recycle bin so that if any important file gets deleted by chance it will not bypass the Recycle bin and can be undeleted back from Recycle bin.

Check the Recycle bin at regular time interval. If any of the deleted file is not important, you can delete it from the Recycle Bin which will create some free space for further deleted files in Windows Recycle bin.

If any files you have to delete is having larger size than that of the Recycle bin size you can delete it partially or by shifting it to any other partition whose Recycle bin has enough size to hold that file.

If you will follow all the above precautions the chances of files getting deleted from Windows Recycle bin will decrease.

In case you have already lost/deleted your important file you can undelete files from Recycle binusing Remo Recover (Windows) Basic Edition software.

The features of this software include recovery of files which are deleted accidentally using shift + delete key combination. The files which are deleted by bypassing the Recycle bin due to large size or lack of free space can also be undeleted using this software. Files deleted using command prompt or from compressed folders can also be undeleted by this software. The software helps to undelete files from Windows Vista, Windows 7, Win XP, Windows server 2003 and Windows server 2008. You can download the software to undelete all your important files from Recycle bin. The software can also undelete files from SD card and other flash drives.

Following are the steps undelete files from Windows 7, Vista and XP Recycle bin:

Step 1: Use any other partition for installation of the software other than the affected partition.

Step 2: After successful installation of the software, run the software. Choose “Recover Deleted Files” to undelete files from Windows Recycle bin as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1 : Select Recover Deleted Files

Step 3: From the next window, select the logical drive from where you lost your files and then click “Next” as shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2: Select Logical Drive

Step 4: The software starts scanning the selected drive. Once the scanning is completed, you can view all your deleted files both in file type view and data type view as shown in Figure 3.

SD card is a storage device, which is used to store various types of data like image files, audio files, video files, etc. Storage capacity of SD card ranges from few MB (Mega Bytes) to few GB (Giga bytes). Usually SD cards are used in digital cameras, mobile phones, PDA’s, and Video game consoles. Sometimes you may lose files that are stored on SD card due to various reasons.

Different scenarios, which lead to file loss from SD card are,

Accidental deletion of files from SD card - When SD card is connected to the system using card reader then while deleting unwanted files from SD card if you delete useful files accidentally then those deleted files will not move to Recycle Bin. Hence, you cannot restore those deleted files from Recycle Bin.

Accidental formatting of SD card- If you press format memory card option accidentally when SD card is used in digital camera, all files stored on the SD card will get deleted.

File loss from SD card while file transfer process- While transferring files from SD card to computer if computer is turned off then you will lose some of the files from the SD card.

However, there is no need to be panic when any file loss occurs from SD card because when files are deleted from SD card, those files will not get deleted permanently. Content of those deleted files will remain in the SD card but the pointer that was pointing to those files will get deleted and therefore those deleted files cannot be accessed. However, it is possible to recover deleted files from SD card provided it is not overwritten by new data.

In order to avoid data loss from the SD card you should take some precautions. They are as follows,

Keep backup of all necessary information in CD, DVD or in external hard drive.

While removing SD card from card reader or from digital camera do not pull it out abruptly.

While transferring files from SD card to system be careful. Do not turn off the system while file transfer is in progress.

If file loss occurs from the SD card then before recovering lost files, do not overwrite any other content on to the same SD card.

Remo Undelete software can undelete files from SD card.

The most popular approach of utilizing computer networks for data storage is the NAS (Network Attached Storage). NAS includes a client/server design. A single hardware device called the NAS box acts as the interface between the NAS and network clients. One or more disk drives can be attached to many NAS systems to increase the total capacity. NAS devices have become the most popular choice for file sharing and data storage. Like any other storage devices, NAS is also prone to data loss.

The most common causes for data loss in NAS, or RAID Arrays are:

Inaccessibility of drives and partitions

Accidental reconfiguration of RAID drives

Hard drive crashes

Hard disk drive component failure

Virus attack

Accidental deletion of data

RAID array/controller failure

Intermittent drive failure resulting in configuration corruption

Accidental replacement of media components

Multiple drive failure

Accidental reformatting of partitions

Remo Undelete can recover files deleted from two disk mirrored NAS, if any one of the drive in the array has healthy file system and the operating system is able to mount the partitions.

Yes, using Remo Undelete software you can certainly recover deleted .pst file.

Chances of Recovery

The chances of recovering your entire .pst file depend on the level of disk fragmentation before corruption. Fragmentation is a common phenomenon, because data is never stored in contiguous fashion on the drive. However, if you have used file defragment tools just or some time before data loss, then chances of recovery is greater.

How are .pst files lost?

Most occurring and common instances of losing .pst files are:

Accidental Deletion

Formatting or Reformatting

Unexpected system shutdown or Software failure

Virus Attacks

Disk Corruption

Partition corruption or re-partitioning

Maintain a regular Backup

In order to overcome and reverse the unexpected scenarios, every outlook user should maintain a regular backup of the .pst file.

Traditional manual methods are time consuming, tedious and fail to take entire backup of an Outlook profile that includes not only e-mail archive but many other important attributes, for e.g. Registry settings, account settings, custom dictionaries, signatures etc. Such risk oriented incomplete manual methods to backup Outlook may not be a wise decision.

The best tool to use is Remo Outlook Backup, which is an advanced backup utility used to take complete backup of Outlook profiles. Designed to create backup archive of almost all outlook items, this software can restore complete e-mail client when disaster strikes or when outlook refuses to load.

Repair .pst file

Remo Undelete will certainly help you to recover the lost .pst file. But once recovered you need to repair the .pst file in order to access your emails. Use Remo Recover Outlook (pst) software which is mainly designed to repair corrupted .pst files.

Windows Vista features many fundamental changes and the “User folders” are one among them. The XP-style Documents And Settings folder is replaced by the Users folder. The user folders are located in the root of the system drive (It is usually located in the C :\) Each user account in Windows Vista has its own profile folder which consists of 11 folders to store different type of data.

The 11 folders included in the user profile are contacts, desktop, documents, downloads, favorites, links, music, pictures, saved games, searches and videos. However, in Windows Vista, Microsoft includes the ability to move user-specific data like Favorites, Contacts, Music, Pictures and others with simple drag and drop operation. The Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos folders are most likely to contain large amounts of data. Files accidentally/intentionally deleted from any of the user folders mentioned above can be easily recovered with Remo Undelete. Remo Undelete can recover accidentally deleted files, including files emptied from Recycle Bin, from Windows Explorer with the SHIFT key + Delete, and lost partitions provided it is used before the files are permanently overwritten by new data.

Tutorial on how to recover deleted files from user folders with Remo Undelete:

Step 1: Start Remo Undelete either from program files or by double clicking on desktop shortcut. Remo Undelete main application window is opened as shown in figure a.

Figure b: Found Files and Folders

After the tree for found files and folders is found click on Show Deleted button, to view only deleted files. The application will now show all the deleted files with a red cross on it. This will help narrow down the files and make it much easier to find the delete file.

Step 3: The next and final step is to restore your found files and folders to a safe location. Click the file you wish to recover and click the “Save” button. As you click save button, a window to select destination location to restore recovered data is displayed as shown in Figure c.

If you have unintentionally deleted some vital pictures off your Digital camera or from an ipod, then don’t panic! They haven’t been permanently erased and you can still get them back.

Recovering deleted files from Digital Cameras or iPods

You will be wondering, how is it possible to recover files that I have already deleted? Well to give a quick answer, digital camera’s storage device (usually use SD card) or iPods (usually use one of two types of storage; miniature hard drives or flash memory) are a lot like a computers hard disk.

Whether the file has been deleted from a digital camera or from an iPod as like a computers hard drive, the file does not get permanently erased; instead the file gets removed and its space gets listed as available, re-usable space. Therefore until that space is overwritten by new data, the deleted file still exists and can be recovered.

So if you thought that the files you accidentally deleted off your digital camera/iPod were gone for good, then think again as with Remo Undelete you can get all of your desired reminiscences back instantly.

Key for recovering deleted files

The solution for recovering your deleted files is to act instantly and you will be almost assured to have your files back.

In order to increase the chances of recovery do not save anymore files as soon as you realize that you have deleted an important file

Best tool for recovering deleted files

Remo Undelete will easily and securely recover deleted files from any type of digital card reader or storage media. Remo Undelete Quickly locates and restores deleted files that other undelete software could never find.

This undelete application provides many features superior to those found in other undelete programs which include saving recovered data in a compressed (ZIP) format, ignoring file types before saving and the ability to preview all files found for precise data recovery selection.
